SHIA MUSLIMS - a member of the branch of Islam that regards Ali as the legitimate successor to Mohammed and rejects the other three caliphs..

Description

Shia Islam, (Shīʿah) is the second largest denomination of Islam. Adherents of Shia Islam are called Shi'ites or Shias. "Shia" is the short form of the historic phrase Shīʻatul ʻAlī(a.s) (شيعة العلي), meaning "followers", "faction", or "party" of Muhammad's son-in-law(s.a.w.s) and cousin Ali(a.s), whom the Shia believe to be Muhammad's(s.a.w.s) successor in the Caliphate.

Shia Islam is based on the teachings of the Quran and the message of the Islamic prophet Muhammad(s.a.w.s).In contrast to other types, the Shia believe that only God has the right to choose a representative to safeguard Islam, the Quran and sharia. Thus the Shias look to Ali(a.s), Muhammad's(s.a.w.s) son-in-law, whom they consider divinely appointed, as the rightful successor to Muhammad, and the first IMAM(a.s). The Shia extend this belief to Muhammad's family, the Ahl al-Bayt(a.s) ("the People of the House"), and certain individuals among his descendants, known as IMAMS(a.s), who have special spiritual and political authority over the community.

Although there were many Shia branches throughout history, modern Shia Islam is divided into three main branches. The largest Shia sect in the early 21st century is the Ithna ashariyya, commonly referred to in English as the Twelvers.
